Added by popular demand, we take a look at the teams in this years Heinz Presents the Stella Di Mare International Pro-Am
Teams to watch this week…
Paul Broadhurst, Neil Watson, John Howden and Mitch Lemmon
Paul is the reigning Stella Di Mare International Pro-Am Professional Champion after shooting a course record 65 to complement a 67 and 72 in last year’s competition. Neil, John and Mitch play their golf at Katameya Dunes in Cairo, a Sir Nick Faldo designed course but are Stella Di Mare regulars. Have to be among the favourites.
Sion E Bebb, Steve Spicer, Ian Spicer and Ron Cooke
Having played 114 events on the European Tour, Sion brings much needed experience to the team of father and son Spicer and close friend Ron. Steve’s face is a permanent fixture in the villa’s here at Stella as he regularly climbs into gardens looking for his little white golf ball. Ian is about to become a grandfather to Steve’s newborn boy who is due in July, congratulations to the Spicer family!
Paul Rawlinson, Jonathan Todd, Ian Grandison and David Todd
This is Paul’s third Stella Di Mare Pro-Am whilst Jonathan and Ian were in Paul’s team for the 2011 event. Having arrived early Monday morning, they will have plenty of time to show David the way around and form a great team partnership. Expect lots of banter off this team and no arguments, which could prove vital come Saturday.
Jason King, Mark Fearn, Richard Smith and Denise Smith
Mark, Richard and Denise are known by all Stella staff as they frequently visit the seaside. This will be Richard and Denise’s last tournament in Egypt as they plan to retire – although the whereabouts is still unknown! Jason will be keen to listen to Richard interesting theories both on the golf course and off!
Matt Stanford, Paul Watson, Jim Brown and Vonnie Brown
Again Stella Di Mare regulars and Cairo residents, Paul, Jim and Vonnie are fixtures in the tournament field here at Stella. Jim and Vonnie come into the tournament in winning form from the Katameya scramble. Matt and Paul played together last year, were just wondering who hits it further, Professional Matt or Paul ‘Bubba Watson!?
Roger Chapman, Ezio Pizzormi, Greg Spoor and Terry Norris
This team only entered late on Sunday night, however with two Stella Di Mare members in Greg and Ezio as well as Stella Pro Clinton’s father Terry playing alongside Roger, they might just surprise everyone. Roger played in The Open 17 times and has over 25 years of Tour experience to bring to the team. Surprise package.
Andrew Marshall, Alisdair Burnie, Tim Purdy and David Pitts
Alisdair and Tim have played Stella Di Mare for many years and so their course knowledge will help David and we are sure that after a practice round, European Tour player Andrew will have Stella figured out. Andrew is our highest ranked player this week at 494th in the world. We welcome him to the field and again this team is dangerous.
James Pye, Stuart Smith, Jan Griep and Tony Rawlings
James played in the 2011 event and joins Stella members Jan and Tony as well as Sharm el Sheikh resident Stuart. Stuart has played Stella on many occasions in the past 6 months so will add course knowledge to a Stella Di Mare experienced team. All of these guys know where the hazards are at Stella, which could be good or bad!
Amr Zaki, Mohamed El Afiffi, Nasser Aly El Kabi and Saphir Gohar
Having performed well in previous Professional events around the links, Amr has the game and course knowledge to be a threat this week. Playing alongside Stella Di Mare regular Mohamed and teammates Nasser and Saphir, this all Egyptian team are certainly one to watch out for.
Stuart Manley, Gavin Manley, Marc Booth and Billy McNeil
Stuart has been playing on both the European Tour and Challenge Tour for the past ten years. Playing alongside his brother and close friends Marc and Billy, this Swansea bunch are expected to be loud, competitive and up there come Saturday.
Ronan Rafferty, Jim O’Malley, Barry Meldrum and George Cunningham
Cairo residents Jim, Barry and George have been looking forward to this week as soon as they knew they were playing with European Tour and Ryder Cup Legend Ronan Rafferty. Having visited Egypt once before for a day trip, Ronan is looking forward to to this week and taking on old foes Paul, Steve and Roger whether it be in the Professional event or the Team event, bragging rights are a must!
Steven Richardson, Doug Brimmer, Rob Kendall and Rob Bennett
Stella regular and Cairo residents Doug, Rob and Rob have been in great form this year and will make a great team partnership alongside Ryder Cup hero Steven Richardson. They will be impressed by Steven’s big hitting and will welcome Steven to Egypt with a lot of beers and banter! Fun team could do very well this week.
Jonathan Armstrong, Lee Grainger, Paul Redmond and Trevor Graham
Previous Egypt resident and Taba Heights Professional Jonathan is used to the hot weather and grass here at Stella. Jonathan describes his playing partners as the best scratch team that play with alcohol so after a few Sakaras the team’s confidence could be fatal to challenging teams hopes or their own!
Henrik Spongh, Ramzi Zeine, Jaafar Hiffawi and Samer Halawa
This Jordan amateur team join Swedish Professional Henrik. The guys will be celebrating the birthday of close friend Frank who unfortunately cannot make the event, with a lot of drinks on Friday says Henrik! Henrik spent 3 years at Stella Di Mare as a Teaching Professional and so knows the course off the back of his hand. He was leading the tournament in 2010 after 44 holes and with the Jordan guys having competed in 2011, watch out for this team.
Samir Zaki, Andy McKnight, Nadine Delivinas and Mrs Helga
Samir is part of the Egyptian golfing great family Zaki of which both uncle Salah and cousin Amr are also competing this week. Andy and Samir won the EPGA Pro-Am Series Final at Stella Di Mare in December 2011 and teaming up with two very classy players in Nadine and Helga, expect this team to go low.
Ian Keenan, Iby Obatoyinbo, Sola Lawson and Paul Orawo
Ian competed in 2010 whilst Iby has great experience at Stella having previous resided in Cairo. All can go low.
Danny Belch, Jason Battersby, Nick Harrison and John Costello
Danny has played in the two previous Pro-Ams and has a great record. Winning the team event in 2010, Danny will be able to give vital advice to his playing partners whilst knowing that the team event is won or lost on day 3.
Ryan Thomas, Christer Schyberger, Michael Sharkey and Robert McLaughlin
Cairo Troon Allegria golf course members Christer, Michael and Robert will enjoy watching Ryan play – he came close to beating Paul Broadhurst in last year’s event. A pure ball striker and great putter, Ryan will help his teammates to a great score around the links.
Magnus Eriksson, Mattias Eriksson, Conny Eriksson and Bertil Eriksson
This Swedish family play golf well together (unlike many families!) and will be helped by Magnus’ knowledge of Stella Di Mare – Magnus has spent many winter months teaching Swedish guests here. The team arrived on Sunday and so will have thoroughly prepared their tactics for the week.
Morgan Olofsson, Lars Olofsson, Torgny Junsson and Thomas Svensson
Having been in contention come the last day of the 2011 Pro-Am, Team Olofsson have again arrived early to prepare for this year’s event. All good players, this team could pick up the winners prize if they can score the same as 2011 on day 1 and 2 but improve their day 3 score.
Daniel Sandberg, Faris Hamoud, Fawaz Hamoud and Fadi Mustafa
Within this team it will be a battle of the long hitters, with Daniel winning the 2010 long drive competition and Stella Di Mare member Fadi having improved his game massively over the past few months, out hitting Stella Pros in a recent game. A very relaxed team they wouldn’t surprise anyone by claiming the title.
Steve Wilson, Mike Murray, Rob Davies and Frank Doyle
Mike, Rob and Frank will be under the leadership of their teaching professional Steve Wilson. Steve has played Stella Di Mare many times over the past 5 years whilst working in Egypt. If Steve’s teaching is on top form this week, his amateur partners could help push their team up the leaderboard.
Walid Sobhy, Matthew Wilson, Markus Teucsich and Bruno Trivelli
Walid is one of the most famous golf professionals in Egypt and interestingly will be joining the Wilson brothers in Wales and England this year for a golfing holiday combined with watching The Open. Bruno is one of the up and coming players in the game in Egypt and has real potential to help his teammates out with some low scores.
Salah Zaki, Don Peden, Bennie Peden and Maged Tawab
An all Egyptian Resident team, Salah is the uncle of Professionals Amr and Samir. Salah came 4th in the EPGA Pro-Am Series Final in December around Stella Di Mare and so will be helping his teammates out this week.
