Matt Stanford, Paul Watson, Jim and Vonnie Brown win the International Pro-Am Team Event

Posted on: Monday 30/04/2012

English Professional Matt Stanford teamed up with Stella Di Mare members Jim and Vonnie Brown and Stella regular Paul 'Bubba' Watson to win the much coveted International Pro-Am Team Prize.

With a fantastic total team score of -63, they held off charges from the likes of team Rawlinson, Amr Zaki, Marshall and Wilson to win by an impressive 8 shots. All team members played superb throughout the 3 days and held the lead after every round - never having their name taken off their live scoreboards! A special mention must go to Vonnie Brown who after only starting golf a couple of years ago kept her team in it with a couple of special nett eagles when her team were getting nervous. Congratulations Team Stanford!

Team Winners Thoughts….
Jim Brown on behalf of team members Vonnie Brown, Paul Watson and Professional Matt Stanford:

"The whole tournament was a superb, well organized, and a week that we all thoroughly enjoyed, it was so exciting! The course was in great shape, we were very impressed with the new layout, although Vonnie doesn’t like the new bunker on 7 as she went in it every day!
It is great to win around Stella Di Mare as it is a really friendly and sociable place to play, which is down to the guys who work there. Our enjoyment both on and off the course over the 4 days cannot be captured in words, but we will try!
A key factor for our win is Matt lining up Vonnie’s putting. It made such a difference. Vonnie was our star player as she was the most consistent and scored well throughout. Also having “Bubba” as team captain is always a major influence in keeping the team going! All the team played really well and dovetailed well with the 2 from 4 scoring. Matt was securing regular pars and birdies which meant we had to only get 1 out of 3, and when Matt did bogey, Vonnie was there with a nett eagle!!
We are delighted to win the Pro-Am as it is myself and Vonnie’s first time and we were very nervous at various points over the 3 days. It is a really big event and even though there wasn’t a big crowd on the first tee, it was still nerve racking having your name called out on the loud speaker. Also, winning an event with such a large and quality field is quite special - I know Paul is ecstatic, he has a massive smile on his face every time he sits down at his desk at work – his trophy is sat right in the middle of his desk!
The team just jelled really well probably because the 3 of us amateurs play every weekend together and we know each other’s games and moods. I think we all have the right nature not to let things get us down too much, we all stayed calm and kept giving each other praise – also Vonnie kept us all on our toes!
One secret to our win was that we all took Saturday off golfing which was a first for a long time, I think this may have given us an extra edge as well as all the extra practice we had put in in the weeks leading up to the tournament.
The best shots of the tournament have to be our Pro Matt on day 2 with birdies at 1 & 2 and then Vonnie’s gross birdie net eagle at the 2nd on day 3 that really gave us a push when we were all getting nervous.
We will certainly try and get the squad back together for 2013. Paul will make every effort to come back from Norway and Matt from England!"
